Let’s be honest………passion is everywhere in conservation.
In the fire of the founder, In the commitment of rangers, In the loyalty of volunteers,
and the tears of project leaders burning the midnight oil.
But here’s the hard truth:
Passion without structure becomes burnout, Commitment without systems leads to chaos,
and great missions fail quietly, not because the work wasn’t worthy, but because the work wasn’t managed.
What’s the Real Problem?
Most conservation organizations don’t lack heart!
They lack:
- Clear roles and responsibilities
- Operational systems
- Fundraising structures
- Consistent communication
- Focused strategic direction
In short they need a minimum viable plan to support their maximum impact mission.
here’s my Minimum Viable Structure (MVS) for Conservation Organisations
You don’t need a fancy office, a corporate board, or a 70-page strategic plan.
But at the very least, you need:
✅ A Clear Mission & Metrics
What are you trying to achieve and how do you measure progress?
Most NPOs overcomplicate this. Start simple.
✅ A Basic Budget & Financial Tracking System
Even if it’s a spreadsheet. Know your income, expenses, and cash runway.
✅ Defined Roles & Accountability
Who’s responsible for what? If everything falls on one person, it breaks.
✅ Donor/Partner Communication Rhythm
Regular updates, even if it’s just once per quarter, make a world of difference.
✅ A Place for Everything (Docs, Photos, Plans, Contacts)
Set up a simple folder structure that everyone uses. It’s not sexy, but it works.
Real Talk from the Field
I’ve sat in that bush office juggling patrols and proposals, I’ve run donor events while managing snare removals, and I’ve helped NPOs go from overwhelmed to on-the-move.
Not with more effort, but with better structure.
You don’t need to do more. You need to do what matters, better.
