The “One Page Strategy” That Will Save Your Sanity

Let’s be honest…

You’ve got a “strategic plan” somewhere.
It’s either:

  • In a board meetings minutes
  • In a Google Drive folder
  • Or in your head
…which means it’s not being used.

Your team is firefighting.
Your founders are overwhelmed.
Your donors are asking: “So what’s the actual plan?”

It’s time to simplify.
It’s time to make your entire strategy fit on ONE page.

Here’s the truth:

Most conservation plans are too big to lead, too vague to follow, and too boring to fund.

You don’t need a 42-page strategy doc.
You need a 1-pager that brings the whole team and your supporters into alignment.

The Anatomy of a One-Page Strategy

This is what your One-Pager should include:

✅ 1. Your Why

What’s your mission? What are you fighting for?

📍Example: “We protect wild spaces by building community-driven conservation economies.”

✅ 2. Your Core Objectives (max 3)

Big focus areas for this year. Not 9. Just 3.

📍Example:

  1. Scale anti-poaching operations
  2. Improve donor communications
  3. Launch community ranger program

✅ 3. Key Initiatives Under Each

List 1–2 projects per objective. No fluff.

✅ 4. Success Metrics

How do you measure progress?

📍Example:

  • “80 snares removed per month”
  • “Quarterly donor updates sent”
  • “10 rangers trained by December”

✅ 5. Owners & Timeline

Who is responsible for what and by when?

If everyone owns it, no one owns it.

✅ 6. Risks & Support Needed

Show you’re thinking ahead. Donors respect readiness.

I helped a KZN reserve rewrite their strategy doc from 37 pages… to 1.

📈 Result?

  • Team finally understood what to prioritise
  • Donors got a clean, fundable roadmap
  • Board actually started using it

You don’t need a fancier plan.
You need a followable one.

Clarity scales. Confusion kills.

If your team is busy but not aligned…
If your board is unsure where you’re going…
If your donors keep asking what the “plan” is…

This one-pager is your lifeline.

If your strategy had to fit on one page, what would you cut?
