Story First. Strategy Second. But Only Just.

In conservation, you have two jobs: protect nature, and make people care.

Most conservation leaders are taught to start with the plan — Strategic goals, KPIs, fundraising targets.
But when you open your mouth, all your audience wants to know is one thing:

“Why should I care?”

That’s the difference between getting a polite nod and getting a donation.

Here’s the truth:

Story doesn’t replace strategy. But story comes first.
Because story is what creates connection.
And connection is what opens the door to everything else — funding, partnerships, support, scale.

You Don’t Need to Be a Novelist. You Just Need to Know This:

Great conservation storytelling has 3 parts:

1. Start with a problem.

What’s wrong in the world? What are you up against? Is it snares, poaching, poverty, climate, cattle?
Be real. Make it personal.

2. Introduce the people doing something about it.

You. Your team. A community member. A rescued animal. A child who planted a tree.
Humanise your mission. Put a face to the fight.

3. Make the reader feel like they can help.

This is where most conservation orgs fall short.
They dump data. Or ask for money with no emotional journey.
You’ve got to show how their involvement changes something. That’s what turns passive support into active funding.

Strategy still matters deeply.

But strategy without story is just paperwork.
And story without strategy is a nice Instagram reel that goes nowhere.

The magic happens when both are aligned — a powerful narrative, backed by a clear plan.

That’s how movements are built.
That’s how money gets raised.
That’s how wildlife gets protected.

What’s the one story you’ve never told publicly… but probably should?

If your team is too close to the work to explain it clearly, or if your story feels flat, scattered, or confusing, let’s sharpen it together.
